An Aging World Needs Accessible Roads: The Demographics Behind Vehicle Mobility
The market for swivel seats, wheelchair lifts and ramps is not a niche. It is what happens when a planet grows old and keeps driving.
The numbers, from the United Nations
According to the UN World Population Prospects 2022, 9.7% of the world’s population was aged 65 or over in 2022. That share is projected to reach 11.7% by 2030 and 16.4% by 2050 — roughly one person in six worldwide. The 65+ population itself is expected to pass 1 billion around 2030.
The shift is not evenly spread, and that is precisely why it matters to this industry:
- Eastern and South-Eastern Asia — where most of the world’s MPV and van production happens — goes from 12.7% aged 65+ in 2022 to a projected 25.7% by 2050. One in four people.
- Europe and Northern America — the traditional export markets for accessibility equipment — reach a similar 26.9%, meaning one in four.
The World Health Organization frames the same trend through its Decade of Healthy Ageing (2020–2030): the number of people over 60 is set to double from 1 billion in 2020 to 2.1 billion by 2050, and the share of people over 60 is expected to rise from 12% to 22% between 2015 and 2050.
Why the car is the battleground
Public transport accessibility improves slowly, one station and one bus at a time. The private car is where an older person’s independence is actually decided: the weekly shop, the clinic appointment, the visit to family. Losing the ability to step into a car is often the first hard limit on independent living — long before walking becomes the problem.
That is the gap this industry fills. A powered swivel seat turns a standard MPV into a vehicle a passenger with limited hip or knee mobility can still use. A wheelchair lift removes the transfer entirely. A folding ramp does the same at lower cost. None of these require buying a purpose-built accessible vehicle that announces “medical” to every neighbour.
What it means for buyers and converters
For converters and fleet operators, the demographic curve is a planning signal: demand for retrofit accessibility will grow with the 65+ share of your operating region, and it will grow fastest in Asia. For families, it means the question is not whether to adapt the family car, but when — and doing it before an incident rather than after.
Velomove engineers its seats, lifts and ramps for exactly this transition: retrofit-friendly, middle-row installations that keep a normal vehicle looking and working like one. See the product lines, or ask us what fits your vehicle.
